Balloon malfunction

the ballon I used for my cats head has burst and I only have 2 layers on it and I am worried about it collapsing when I do more are there any tips to help me save it from doing this?

(I think a bit of wire went through it)

Re: Balloon malfunction

Oh Nooooooo!

I have worked so hard on the rest of him.

I have just put a layer on with pure pva glue and its dried ok with no dents.
so I will just go carefully and wait for each part to dry completely.

If all else fails I can chop it off and stick a new head on.

Re: Balloon malfunction

So presumably your two layers kept their shape even though the balloon deflated.  You are really lucky and wise to go VERY carefully.  Yes, one layer at a time, with good drying time and hopefully you will be OK.  Aim for 6 - 12 layers, depending on how strong you want it to be.
You could consider packing it with screwed up paper if you think it necessary.

Re: Balloon malfunction

I think using flour glue has made it stay firm even tho it burst.
So far so good, I am working on it outside and today has been a good drying day so maybe it will be ok I am going to leave it now for a few days to dry totaly...even tho the temptation to fiddle with it is so strong lol.

Good job I have some others to mess about with...lol

Re: Balloon malfunction

It's perhaps a bit too late, but if this happens again, you may try to carefully cut a large enough hole to retrioece the old burst balloon. Then you can insert a new one of same shape, carefully inflate it until it fills the space nicely.

This is speculation, but it may work!

Re: Balloon malfunction

It can work, I can vouch for that! I have done this a few times with really large balloons. It is not perfect by any means. It doesn't hold the thin shell of papier mache very firmly, so you have to be really careful how you apply the next strips. This can be very time consuming.

If you have a small balloon and have only put on a couple of layers it probably isn't worth your time continuing with it. You could cover a new balloon more quickly than it would take to rectify the first one.

Re: Balloon malfunction

Thanks for the help.

Its going ok and seems to be doing ok I am working on four other projects so its having plenty of time to dry well but as its only the second  piece I have ever done its great for learning where I have gone wrong and to just chuck it does not seem right for me
