Adhesives

Hi! I'm new to this forum and also just getting started in working with paper mache.
I love it and already know that is what I will concentrate on from now on. At this time I have one question - why can't I find a supplier of methylcelluose? From everything I've read it is the best adhesive yet I can't find a supplier anywhere. I tried using the links from this site under tutorials but no luck, also all other searches turned up nothing. Is there another name I should be looking under? I've also tried CMC with no results.
Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Thanks!

Re: Adhesives

Many moons ago there was a methyl cellulose wallpaper paste, for the life of me I can't remember the manufacturer.  If I were you I would contact a local builders merchants, a proper one, not the homebase or wickes sort.  Ask the guys in the decorators department for advice, I find they are amaziningly helpful and usually know what is in most adhesives they sell.

Frank Key in Nottingham UK is great for this,  google them for their phone number.

David O may be able to give you a manufacturers name as he is the king of adhesives. If you are stateside then Sue Catperson is your woman!  Hope that helps.

Re: Adhesives

They certainly don't make it easy, do they?

When you are looking for a particular product, please let us know what country you are in.

Try googling 'cellulose wallpaper paste'

UK source:
UK source
Auro 389 Wallpaper Paste
£8.51 for 0.2kg
http://www.naturaldeco.co.uk/products/d … er%20paste

Some U.S. sources:
Elmer's (Papier Mache) Art Paste (dry)
About $3 for 2 oz, makes a gallon (somewhat alkaline at pH 8)
http://www.dickblick.com/products/elmers-art-paste/

Lineco Methyl Cellulose Adhesive (neutral pH 7 for bookbinding)
About $8 for 1.5 oz
http://www.dickblick.com/products/linec … -adhesive/

International:
Henkel Metylan brand of Clear Cellulose Adhesive Wallpaper Paste (sold through Roman Adhesives in U.S.)
You may be able to find it in a local hardware or wallpaper/paint store, but be aware that you MUST ask for the clear cellulose kind, as they have several kinds.
About $12 for a 16 oz box (dry)

Re: Adhesives

In the US, Elmers papier mache paste is methyl cellulose (CMC) but I haven't found them very helpful as a firm.
Wallpaper paste that is called 'cellulose' is not necessarily CMC.  Often it is a potato based produce, which works quite well but too often has fungicides added to stop it rotting.   It is best not to absorb this into the skin.
