Maria has sent this picture of her mermaid, which I am pleased to post in the Forum for her.
I think Sue's thoughts that this is a chemical reaction is correct.  The only solution is to cut off the hands (Ahhhhhhh!), make new ones separately and then join them to the arms using thin dowel and strong paper laminate.  I guess it is called a transplant!!

I am pleased to place Maria's picture of her troubled mermaid for her.  It certainly looks as though Sue is right about chemical problem.  Those hands are real goo.
As she suggests, it is probably best to amputate, make new hands and transplant them, using dowels to help make a firm bond.

Re: CMC powder

Sadly Maria I agree with David.

Having said that, my first marionette, the snow queen, was a disaster with lumpy pm on her torso.  I tearfully pulled off all the horrible lumpy mess and remade the body and head.  She turned into one of my favourite pieces and was worth all the effort.

Stick with it, in the long run you will be very glad you took the time.
If it helps I made a pair of hands for a rod puppet (unfinished) I used OASIS, the green or grey crumbly block used by flower arrangers.  Make sure it is the dry version otherwise it will just absorb and hold the water in the Papiermache.  I carved the wrist and palm from this then I stuck wire into it for the thumb and fingers.  These I wrapped in tissue paper to make the fingers and thumb fat.  Finally I layered the whole hand in strips of paper and glue before putting on the paint and gesso.  It is great as a base as it is light and you can stick in wires and things as you like.

Hope that helps,

PS, I think she is fantastic and look forward to seeing her finished

Re: CMC powder

I tried to post Maria's picture of her mermaid before.  It appeared and then, later, disappeared.  I don't know why.  So I will try again.

Re: CMC powder

Now you see it; now you don't.  I'll have to ask Russ what I've done wrong.  I posted a picture for Maria.  In the message list it showed me as the last contributor on this topic but the message with the photo doesn't show.  Maria has seen it.  I have seen it . . but now it's gone.
A puzzle to solved.

Re: CMC powder

David, I am seeing your post and Maria's photo three times. The third one is the largest and easiest to see.

Maria, your mermaid's hair is BEAUTIFUL!  How did you make it?

Re: CMC powder

Hola :

back from vacations .Sue the hair i make it with paper strips , and i mixed carpenters glue , with chalkpowder, and a little water .
Then i count the paper strips seven each time , mixed and squeeze the excess , and molded with my hands , where is needed.
I let it dry , and then i painted with my choice of color , let it dry again , and add a hand of carpenters glue .
In other project i mixed the paint with all the rest , but im not sure , if i like it , i think it loose body .
And as you said I want everything for yesterday , so i used fans , and my new warmer , to acelerate the drying process .
I also want to try for color the hairs , with some OCRE powder , i dont know how you name this in English . Because the Ocre cames in various colors , and is powder so the paper strips they wont loose the body , with excess of color paint .
Have you ever try Ocre podwer ?

Re: CMC powder

I know Ochre as the range of pigments that run from a deep brown through to a fine yellow.  Artists use them in there mineral powder form to mix with oils or eggwhites etc to form paints.  They are very intense,  here in the uk you can by colour in powder forms that are soluble in water or other liquids, they tend not to be pure pigments though.

From personal experience I tend to use only dyes in powder form as they are tricky and a little goes a very long way.  Also be prepared to colour your hands, face and everything around you.  There is a wonderful one sold here in England known as Brusho.  http://www.colourcraftltd.com/default_c.asp
it is a water soluble, very brilliant coloured powder that can be used in many ways.  you can buy it on the internet in boxes of 12 and 24.
If you don't have a local supplier try the company they may be happy to ship it out to you.

Re: CMC powder

Charlotte:

Thank you for your reply , that art web is beautiful .
Today i bought in the supermarket a mop , we call a mecha , is for cleaning the floor .
Im thinking in used as hair wig in one of my projects , and of course is better to use dyes for that , because i try once with a piece of wiping rag , and ochre with water and when it drys all the ochre  was like baby powder flying in the air ..........
I go back to work .
