Just wanted to say hi and thank you

Hi I’m new here.

I would like to take a moment to say that I’ve really enjoyed reading the various articles, tutorials and the forum. I’ve never used PM before, not even in school! So I didn’t really know where to begin and this site has been invaluable. The wealth of information and everyone’s readiness to share their tips and techniques is what makes this site such a great place.

I’m lucky enough to make my living as an artist doing what I enjoy in life and I can’t tell you how excited I am to discover PM and this site. It has inspired me to try something new and take things in a new direction. I’ve already got a few experimental pieces on the go, I started them last night. I stayed up into the early hours of the morning working on them. I’m regretting that now as I had to get my daughters to school this morning, but that’s how things go when I get inspired. I’m sure I will have some questions in the future but for now I just wanted to say hi and a big thank you to everyone who makes this such a great place.

Great to hear that the site is of use to you Seb.  Since Jackie Hall and Russ formed it, there has been an enormous amount of exchange and sharing all across the world.  It has helped me and lots of others a great deal.
We look forward to seeing some of your work in the gallery when you are ready.

Welcome, Seb!

If you run into problems, let us know and perhaps we can help.

If you make any nice discoveries, please post them, too.

Re: Just wanted to say hi and thank you

Hi Sue and David thanks for the welcome and offer of help.

David, I will post some pictures in the gallery once I have something to show.

Sue, how did you guess that I would be experimenting from the start? I’m busy mixing and trying all sorts of recipes to see what results they produce and thinking of things I can add to get different textures and finishes. At the moment it resembles alchemy more than art smile

Everything is being kept in a note book, including a little sample of the dried PM for future reference. The one thing that I really do like about PM is this feeling of discovery and mixing my own recipes. It makes the final product so much more rewarding.

Anyway I hope that I’ll be able to share some nice discoveries and I’ll be sure to warn people if I have any nasty surprises as well.

Seb

'...how did you guess that I would be experimenting from the start?'

Everyone may not start out that way, but I wouldn't be surprised if many/most do.

it's a fairly inexpensive hobby... mostly.  But it doesn't take long for people to start thinking 'What would happen if I...?'

Besides experimenting with papers, adhesives,  armatures and paints, people have incorporated materials like glitter, sawdust, pet hair, dryer lint, dried flower/plant parts, silk threads, wool, rusted metal parts, beads, dry dog food, bark, cardboard, sheet music, plastic toy parts, wire, wire mesh, feathers, and many other materials and objects.

You could probably say that it's the nature of the material.

Re: Just wanted to say hi and thank you

I don't envy you your journey, Seb, because I'm still doing it myself.  Probably I don't explore widely enough but it's fun anyway.
You've no doubt seen Jackie Hall's book that is advertised on the homepage.  You might also look at the book by Nives Cicin-Sain.  If you go to her gallery, then her website, it is advertised there.  She has developed a most interesting technique over 30 years and produces magical work.  But the gallery of course has an incredible collection and variety from all over the world.  Fun, isn't it!
