PM onto plastic

I have a number of plastic drinks bottles that I want to turn into dolls.  I have never attempted to apply PM to plastic before, do I need to key the surface first?

I'd like to know this too because the kids haven't managed to get pm to stick.

Re: PM onto plastic

Hello,
I always cover the plastic bottle with paper strips and glue. Just one layer. After that you can apply paper pulp without a problem.

Krise is right, use paper strips as a base, and make sure that the strip ends overlap so they can hold on, they can't just meet.

If you have thrift shops around that have bags of adding machine tape (2" or 3" /5-8cm wide), you can use that, esp handy for a larger project.

Re: PM onto plastic

Hello Charlotte!!
I am María, a new user of this intresting site. I don't really know yet how this works, that is why I am conctacting you... your email address just bumped into me!!
I would like to ask you a few questions in case you could help me...
I have been asked to make a huge word globe. My boss has thought that it would be great to cover a whole polystyrene ball with papier machè in order to get an earthy surface. Have you ever tried to do so? Do you think I should cover that ball first with newspaper strips? and last but not least, which kind of paint do you think would be the best in order to get a perfect finish?
Thank you very much for you attention!!!
maría.

Re: PM onto plastic

I find using full strength pva and paper strips for the first layer works well, let it dry then continue with paper and diluted pva. (we dont use pulp for all sorts of practical reasons). I prefer to have the students use small pieces (about 4cm x 2cm) of paper or they try and wrap huge pieces which fold and wrinkle and are impossible to do anything with.

Re: PM onto plastic

I plan to give this a go, as soon as other ongoing projects are in the bag.  Thanks for all the tips, I am beginning to think that pva on layer one and then back to my favourite paste and newspaper for the next ones.  The final ones will be in pulp for features etc.

I'll post as soon as I am finished, I have been finishing up a doll commission (my 2nd one yipee) then I have two butterfly winged peg dolls to do before visiting family. Also raven is feeling neglected in the window and wants some more feathers and a proper log to sit on.
