After a lot of trial and error with different materials, I've found that wallpaper lining paper is absolutely brilliant for making strip papier-mache. I've yet to try pulping it, but working with strips it comes out really strong. And it's cheap too - and you get loads on a roll..
You probably all know this already of course, but I thought I'd share just in case.. Jackie - I hope your finger gets better soon!

Lining paper sounds a great idea...I will give that a try. Anyone actually tried pulping it? You wouldn't get that awful black ink with it at least! Thanks for the good wishes..I never was very good with sharp objects. Much prefer a soft paper mush!
