Advise from a newbie!

Gadz! What has the world come to! Advice from a newbie? Don't be silly.

Ok, I won't.

If you're considering this a an artistic outlet for yourself, good! But there are some things to consider.

It is messy! Having glue on your fingers is a little annoying. You can get used to it, though.

It is messy! Your kitchen will be your pour zone, because there's easy clean up with a faucet nearby. It will be in a little disarray.

It is messy! You need to get organized. You need

1. A large countertop or table to work on.

2. A large box (at the minimum) for storing carboard, ping pong balls, straws, Q-tips, styrofoam,  golf tees,  um... you get the picture.

3. A medium sized box (at the minimum)  for paste, paints, pulp, Gess0, and laquers/polymers.

4. A small box for brushes, exacto knives, sanding blocks, etc.

You can minimize 2, 3, and 4 with a cabinet.

This takes time!  Tearing strips can be tedius.

This takes time! Strips have to be the right size for the suface you're working on. Tight curves are fit with small strips. Large surfaces can use larger strips.

This takes time! Layering up is tedius.

This takes time! Layering up is tedius.

You need to be patient.

Lastly (the good stuff) the joy comes when you start shaping, and not until! More joy comes when you paint. Even more joy comes when others see your delightful work for the first time!! STILL MORE JOY COMES when you hand it to someone and say "Here. I made this for you." These are great rewards!

But you need space, organization, time, and... uh.. what was it... oh yeah....  a tolerance for sticky fingers!

And when you really get going, multiple large boxes, and then a room to put them in!  big_smile

And if you've got an experimental nature, this is your medium!

And a small shed for extra large boxes, boards and chicken wire.

And an overwhelming desire to get stuck up to your elbows in glue  big_smile .

Re: Advise from a newbie!

We currently can't find the food in what was our kitchen! I am seriously considering converting the garage before my family throw me out of the house.

It is probably best to buy a row of cottages - and just live in one of them.  Then you can use one for your papering and another for storage!

My stuido (small box room) is more like an old coat. You sort of wear it more than work in it  big_smile .

Ha ha ha ha ha! Is that because it's so small, or because it sticks to you?

I'm just starting out, but the way you guys are talking I may have to resort to this:

Re: Advise from a newbie!

With your enthusiasm you are going to need at least two of those, and an extra shed for the finished pieces.

Let us know when you post your first gallery. big_smile  Luckily virtual storage space is always there for us.
