As my user name implies I don't have a lot of papier mache experience however I have decided to embark on a rather large project in order to pop my paper cherry. I would like to build myself a fully functional papier mache coffin. It must be suitable for burial in a green burial site and therefore can't contain any non-biodegradable chemicals or preperations. (such as modrock)
Had thought to build a framework of some sorts out of willow sticks and then cover it with the mache but i'm not sure of the best way to go about either making the paper pulp or covering the structure - help please!! Any advice gratefully received. Cheers

Strange . . .that's something I've often thought about.
Of course, you do have to think of the load bearing element, and that will vary from person to person. Whitewood as a framework, joined with an understanding of carpentry should be strong enough. It is biodegradable, other than the occasional screw that might be used.
After that, layers of corrugated card laid at 90 degrees to each other are extremely strong. I'm planning to use it for a musical instrument case.
Internal squared or triangular tubes add to the engineering strength.
Using PM, you can create a stylish (or crazy) exterior, reflecting all the things you like.
I'd suggest you experiment with the corrugated card layers and then strength test them. You could roll some into tight cylinders and use them for the legs of a chair made entirely out of corrugated card. If it holds firm when you sit on it (and it certainly should), you're on the right trail.
PS - Don't rush to fill it!!

Sounds good, someone had suggested a heavy duty paper -as is used in coracle- but corregated cardboard would definatly be alot stronger - thanks very much. Don't worry am trying to stay out of it as long as possible!! Perhaps I should make it very uncomfortable as a deterant!

Hi
Your idea about using willow is good as alot of the green burials ive seen are weaved baskets very nice. you would need some basic skills in basket weaving it doesn't take long to pick up you could then cover with papier mache i think the two combined would look quite good. My friend has already made her exit box and while she's not in residence she made a 6ft day glow skeleton out of papier mache to keep inside. (great for getting your own back on the kids at halloween).
