my first post: celluclay question

Hi,

I'm new here- doing some research before getting started on my first project. I want to make small dolls (about 6 inches) - my question is: Can the body be molded using the celluclay or will I have to use something like paper, styrofoam, wood for the body with the celluclay as a coating?
Hope I'm making sense.

Thanks,
Gina

Re: my first post: celluclay question

Gina, I would say you probably can, the stuff is really hard when it dries.  But it might be easier to use a simple wire skeleton underneath.  You could shape the wire so the arms and legs and torso are the length you want, and in the positions you want, then apply Celluclay to the wire.  This would probably be the best if your dolls are to be fairly slender.  Thick, stumpy dolls would still be easier with the wire, but you could probably do it without it.

Check the tutorials at this site like this one:  http://www.papiermache.co.uk/exec/cms-d … iew/id-15/

and see the simple wire armature that is inside the figure.  Nothing complicated, but it will help you keep the shape you want.

Re: my first post: celluclay question

I would seal it with clear varnish or polyurethane after it was thoroughly dry and decorated.  There's always a certain amount of moisture in the air, and there's no reason to leave all your hard work open to ruin.

Have fun!
