strengthining existing papier mache structure

Hi everyone, Im a newbie with a problem. Im a art student and I have recently made a piece with pm (not having used it since I was maybe 8...) and I want to continue with it, but am having structural problems. First of all, I constructed a base from 2 by 4s and dowels, 15 feet high. Then I pmd balloons in various sizes and tied them to the base from the bottom up so that they taper in size from largest at the bottom, to smallest at the top. It was inspired by the exhaust plumes created by rockets when they take off, and I am very pleased with it. Problem is since it was so big and I only had a little time to make it, I only put one layer of pm on most of the balloons. I would like to be able to add to it, and move it for exhibit. but logically it is to flimsy.
My question is this, aside from just adding more layers of pm, can anyone suggest a way to make it more structurally sound? Im hoping there is a cheap, liquid I can paint on or spray on that will add a structural layer. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

One layer of paper isn't going to be enough I'm afraid.
You'll need a couple more. But if you use PVA instead of paste, that will strengthen it somewhat.
Although maybe if you really are pushed for time you could just paint it with undiluted PVA a great number of times! Then, when painted, numberous coats of varnish. It'll certainly make it stronger, but the underlying structure of just one layer of paper will still be a problem for you.
But let us see what it looks like - sounds interesting!

Thanks for your suggestions, I was afraid that part about putting more layers on was going to be the main answer. Anyways, Ill try to post some photos when I get a chance.

Since I don't know what your structure looks like, I'm just going to throw this idea out there:  paint it with PVA and then press on a layer or two of cheesecloth, then another layer of PVA.  You might even be able to paint on a   good layer of thick latex wall paint.

Just be aware that these are ideas, none tried and true!  And it wouldn't really be pure PM, either... more like multi-media!
