paper mache pulp question..is a boil or soak a must?

Why is water even needed to start the pulp? Could i not use a coffee mill to grind the paper into the fluffy pulp material needed then add the other materials later to get it to workable form? Or am i missing something that requires paper soaking in water? BTW great resource for the artform. Very informative.

I wouldn't recommend putting dry paper into your grinder or blender - unless you want to kiss to goodbye to it!  lol

Seriously, the fibres in the paper need to be softened and broken up not cut. It is the same principle as when we tear newspaper strips as opposed to using scissors.
