saguaro cactus flowers

I bought a 6 foot articifical saguaro cactus plant.  I'd like to have fun with it by making some saguaro cactus flowers to put on it.  I have pictures of what the flowers look like but how would i go about making paper mache ones???   Much thanks for any help.....  Shelly big_smile

Re: saguaro cactus flowers

If anyone wants to see what this lovely flower looks like (the Saguano, not Shelly) see http://www.50states.com/flower/arizona.htm
How to make it.  I can only suggest ideas.  Hopefully others will come up with something better.
Get some reusable modelling compound - plasticene, pastry dough etc.  Make small shapes to form the petals on.  Cut your petal shapes, allowing a reasonable 'stem' for mounting in the calyx, in white tissue paper.  Brush PVA (white glue) on the tissue paper and lay it on your former.  Squeeze the point together.  Leave to dry.  You'll need a lot.
When they're dry, stick the 'stems' of the petals to a small (cardboard?) ring of suitable size and brush a little delicate cream paint over the inner part.
Stamens?  I can't see that this can be paper.  Perhaps embroidery thread or similar.  Get a length, wipe it with PVA and leave to dry.  When stiff, cut into the stamen lengths (again, a lot of them) and dip one end of each into thick PVA to give a blob.  Bunch them together and stick them in the centre.
Since I'm guessing here, it would be best to trial each bit before going ahead.  Do please let us know if it works - a picture in the gallery perhaps.

Yup.
BUY ONE.  Best if it is artificial.  I understand the actual plants can consume 200 gallons of water!!

You cant afford to be lazy if you are looking to make beautiful PM flowers.  You efforts will show in your results.  Dopapier gave you a good suggestion on how to make the flower.  I would also add that the center could be made by gluing on crushed eggshell for the texture.
