Papier mache mirror

Hi- great website!
I'm trying to work out how to make a papier mache frame for a mirror.
Has anyone done this?

Re: Papier mache mirror

Welcome to the forum Jessthekat!

I've seen a woman make one on a craft show.  She cut a board to the shape she wanted.  Glued the mirror on, which was smaller than the board shape.  Covered the mirror with tape.  Then used pulp mache to build up the frame in the shape she wanted.  After the mache dried, she primed it, sanded it and painted it.  When the paint was dry, she used a utility knife to carefully remove the protective tape over the mirror.  It was a sun shaped mirror, but I imagine you could do any shape you wanted.  There are lots of recipes on the tutorials section for pulp mache.

Hope this helps!

Re: Papier mache mirror

Just one tip, make sure the board the mirror is attached to is quite stiff. When the pulp begins to dry it shrinks and can course the mirror to crack if the board its attached too is not strong enough to take it.

Good luck

Re: Papier mache mirror

Have a look at my gallery (David Osborne) where there is a mirror with a frame in the shape of a teddy bear.

Re: Papier mache mirror

If your making a large mirror, I suggest using a good grade of plywood and brushing on three or four coats of polyurethane, this will help  prevent warping.  wink
