Yet another newbie

Hey all!  I've been reading up on lots of inexpensive crafts over the last few days, and so far it seems like papier mache is everything I've been looking for...incredibly versatile and dirt cheap is a great combination. big_smile I'm pretty much a complete newbie at this though, the only thing I've ever done with papier mache was an art project way back in grade school.

This forum has been very helpful, I've been delving around in the old threads and come across lots of great advice. Today I rounded a big box of old newspapers and whatever else I could find around the house, and tomorrow I'm going to get started on my first project. Once I practice a little and get the hang of things I'm thinking of making some Christmas ornaments to sell at a craft show (I make soaps and bath products, but I'm always looking for something eyecatching and lower priced to attract more customers).

I thought a few stars and angels would be nice, and for the typical round ornaments I figured something really simple to do would be to mache over some of the plastic eggs I still have hanging around from Easter. My question is, can I put the paper directly over the eggs, or should I cover them with tape or something first? (I think I read a post where someone suggested masking tape?)

I believe the purpose of the masking tape is to give the PM something to stick to.  Since plastic eggs are very smooth, you may need to use it.  However, they are also very small so you may not see any problems.....I'd say just experiment and see what works.

Solara: How have your projects been going. Sorry for my late reply. It is usually best to put plastic wrap over a plastic mold if you are going to put the paper and paste right over it.  You can also use vaseline to help loosen it away from the plastic mold as well, just be aware it can be time-consuming to take off.

Are you keeping the mold inside or will you be cutting off the papier-mache so the middle is hollow when you are done?
