I have posted some questions about linseed oil as I kept on seeing how good the stuff was for Paer Mache. Article on PM were constantly referring to using it to strengthen and make PM more durable. I went out and bought a HUGE expensive bottle of it (which is not so easy to find here) I would like to give my own opinions on linseed oil. Linseed Oil should never be used for strip method paper mache. I almost ruined 3 precious pieces by coating them with linseed oil. Even though my pieces sat in the hot Saudi Arabian sun over three weeks after applying linseed oil , I had a hard time priming with latex. Even after I got the latex on, the oil kept seeping through in spots. The final paint job was alright with acrylics but the piece I painted with tempura was awful. (The paint was discolored and spotty). I still put linseed oil when I am preparing my pulp and it seems to be ok. But DON'T put it on Strip/Paste method PM. ~Tammy

Hi
This is Rahul.
As far as Linseed is concerned my experience is very much like yours. One should only use it on pulp. It keeps the pulp workable for a long time and also smoothens the texture.
However Linseed does not dry in sun or heat it actually dries oxidation in air and it takes a minimum of 6 months to dry hard. However the surface is ready to receive acrylic paints or water based primers after 3 months of drying in dry climate.
So if such a trouble comes back to you as I have found in my picture cum mache work you better let it wait for 3 months.

Boiled LInseed Oil is a lot quicker, but I dont know exactly how quick.

Believe me, You don't want to use ANY kind of linseed oil on strip/paste paper mache. I used boiled linseed oil on those almost ruined projects. If it weren't for dopapier's (Dave Osbourne's) advice of cleaning all residual oil with alcohol and then adding two more layers of strip paper on top, my pieces would have been ruined. I still add linseed oil to my pulp mix with no problems.

Hi,
If you have a failed project due to linseed coating you can clean it with Industrial type Thinner. I have got very good results from it.
