newbie building model houses

hello, i'm a student from Australia and i'd really like to get started on buildling a model house using papier mache. it's something that i've always wanted to do and i'd really like to build it like you'd build a house in real life. my dad's in the construction business so i know how it's (theoretically) done and all the structural stuff and etc. but i'm having trouble with the materials side of it...:?

my question is, with making the pulp to make my bricks with, do i have to boil  the stuff? and is making it with normal scrap paper ok too? rather than using newspaper? cos i don't really want to use my mum's pots to boil the pulp, she might kill me...you never know. i've tried making the bricks just by wet paper, and found that it's really tricky to get it down smoothly cos they're so small (about the size of your pinkie nail), so i'm thinking pulp might be my best chance....

thank you!

Re: newbie building model houses

I've always made my paper mache bricks using cut thin pieces of styrofoam (the kind you find in blocks used for packing fragile stuff).  I cut the styrofoam with a long box cutter-razor blade (be careful) Sawing through the foam creates very smoothe edges, cutting the bricks to the desire shape/size.  I glue the bricks on to the project using any PVA or wood glue. After the glued bricks are dry, I brush the tops and cracks of the bricks with my PM paste (I use a flour-water-salt-clorox-wood glue mix) Apply loo roll paper (Or any paper towel product)in layers brushing in between layers.  Leave to dry.  Your finished brick surfaces should be hard "as a brick" Prime-paint-finish as usual. I hope this helps! LOL Tammy
