Paper mache - mistake

Hi, it's my first time of doing anything with paper mache and I stupidly hadn't realised that I needed to seal it before painting. I've painted the outside of the box, im wondering if I should put the glue/water seal over the top of where I've already painted? Thanks.

Re: Paper mache - mistake

Some people do paint right on top of the papier mache, and only seal it after it's fully painted.

What kind of glue did you use?

How does the painted area look? Paper will often require a second coat for good coverage, especially for the base/background color, because the paper tends to absorb quite a bit of paint during the first coat.

Are you using acrylic or latex paint?

I haven't used any glue yet, I had read that pva with water (50:50) was appropriate.
There is a bit of bubbling on one side and I still need to do a few more layers yet!
I'm using acrylic paint.

Re: Paper mache - mistake

For the bubbles, see if you can use an Exacto knife or a small box cutter knife to make a careful X over the bubble. Then moisten it with some of your PVA mix, and press it down.  Be sure to press all fresh PM applications down firmly.

I would get the entire piece finished before painting. When you've got the layers finished, just give it a thin coating of the PVA glue mix -- it is acrylic-based, so acrylic paint on top should do a good job.
