I have glazed a bowl with water glass to make it waterproof. Did  any of you try that? Water glass is used to waterproofig pottery. I will opdate my expiriment in my gallery.

Re: Waterproof paper mache

It's an interesting idea, and I'm looking forward to your results.

But there's a problem with papier mache and moisture:  all it takes is a single pinhole that didn't get covered, and by the time you discover it, it's too late.

You can cover PM with marine varnish (used on boats), and if you don't cover it 100%, it's..... well..... dead in the water and filled with mold.

Waterproofing is often good against moisture in the air (humidity), but direct immersion or pooling rain is difficult to protect against completely.

But the sodium silicate is an interesting concept, nonetheless.
