how strong is papier mache?

Hello I'm trying to find a solution for an ongoing problem with brittle plastic storage boxes which keep breaking, smashing in fact, when knocked or dropped. I thought of covering them with papier mache, what does anyone think, would this give sufficient strength to stop them breaking?

I think there is a good chance that it would work.  You would have to use PVA (white glue) to get a good bond, even lighty sanding the plastic with a coarse paper to help the adhesion.  Laminating with about three layers should be enough.  It's worth a try.

If nothing else, the papier mache might hold the pieces of plastic together.

But if you're that rough with the containers, maybe metal would be a better material for you.
