Dear Annie, first I must say that your photo is very sweet. A fairy somewhere in Wales may be. Second: Thanks for the compliment. The story is fairly simple: He is a real person. I had a small photo and working with my fairly rough pulp I it often turns out to be very characteristic. It was a gift for the 80th birthday of 'Onkel Hans' who was indeed a grain miller. Plus I have a background as a makeup artist....it might help too, even though I never pursuit this profession after my training. The funny thing is that I am terrible at drawing. It takes me forever and I get lost in unnecessary details, but when I do doll or puppet heads it seems to come easier, actually often it feels that THEY help me to do the work. Another thing is, that I am NO good at all making pretty female faces. I prefer to make animals, funny old men and fantasy characters like ugly old witches. Hope that this answers your question.

Ha ha ha I certainly am no fairy from Wales. I'm a coal miners daughter that until recently lived in a 400yr old cottage close to the Pennine moors now I live in North Yorkshire on the east coast by the Sea.
Thanks for revealing the story behind The Grain Miller, I find it interesting that you prefer to make funny old men etc I'd prefer to make pretty female faces and have never tried to make an old man or women for that matter, though I'm working on a piece at the moment called the countess and she really needs to by old and a bit dignified but I'll find it a bit daunting
regards Annie
