....here's an explanation in English I promised to my friends about Klytemnestra .....daughter of King Tyndareus and Queen Leda of Sparta .....sister of Helen of Troy and the wife of King Agamemnon of Mycenae a 'femme fatale' according to the play write Aeschylus and one of the main characters in his Oresteia Triology. she never forgave her husband Agamemnon for sacrificing their daughter Iphigeneia to the goddess Artemis in return for the most favourable sailing conditions for his 1000 strong fleet of ships destined for Troy and ultimately the conquest of Troy. When Agamemnon returned to Mycenae 10 years later having destroyed and obliterated Troy Klytemnestra and her lover Aegisthus murdered him. The inspiration for my Klytemnestra came from a combination of memories and impressions from my early school years and a performance I saw at Epidavros theatre some years later. .......she has just murdered Agamemnon and although this is a very violent and bloody scene I chose not to include blood or a bloodied weapon. ......with a look of pride, arrogance and revenge she stands above the dead King...her arms open and outstretched and says to the public who are stunned by her act... ......."Honourable citizens of Argos...this here is my husband Agamemnon,dead by my right hand ,an instrument of justice. I have taken revenge for my daughter's death,the offspring I had from him, the offspring who perished because of him. I have no more tears to shed for her and for a long time I have been weaving a vendetta deep inside me. Now I stand here where I delivered the blow,above my deed an offering to the King of Hades,saviour of the dead. ........here he is......dead...the lover of Cassandra,..his actions were worthy...his fate equally worthy. ......I cast him down ......I killed him and I will bury him ......his daughter Iphigeneia will welcome him and kiss him at the fast flowing river of tears" ......THAT"S ALL honourable papier mache friends.
