Great Whale

Details

about 2m h in total.

Part of a series inspired by Moby Dick, so this is a sperm whale. The armature is mostly steel rod with some fibreglass reinforcement at the critical points. I really wanted driftwood for the base but the big bits are hard to come by; this old bit of railway sleeper used to prop up part of an outbuilding, and after sandblasting was perfect for the job. The whale itself can be carried by one person, but the base is really heavy and gives the necessary stability.

As I mentioned in the comment to 'Goosey Gander' I'm especially interested in seeing larger works in papier mache that people have made and at 2m your whale certainly fits that criterion! It's another gorgeous figure - the diving pose is very realistic and he's really beautifully sculpted. It's a pity you didn't get the driftwood base you were after since you wanted one, but actually I think the sandblasted railway sleeper looks fantastic - the, um, straight lines and dark colour of it contrast most effectively with the pale, more fluid shape of the diving whale and dare I say it there's even another layer of connection....you know, Moby Dick / commercial whaling, railways / industrialization - if not deliberate then it was definitely, well, serendipitous.
