Papier Mache Santa

Hi there,  I'm looking to do a last minute Xmas craft project with my 10-year old daughter (guilt from spending too much time at work and not enough time with her!).  We wanted to try and make a Santa for the front porch by the door - say 18-24 inches high.  We have never done papier mache before and don't know where to start - chicken wire, styrofoam as a base, etc??

If anyone can help us out with ideas and / or websites that could help with this project, I would be very grateful.

Cheers,
Karen and daughter Samantha

Re: Papier Mache Santa

Hey Karen (easy to remember lol )

Skip the wire and styrofoam. Stuff plastic bags with newsprint to shape belly and head. Pack it tight, Use masking tape to seal it. For legs and arms, roll newsprint to desired thickness. Cover the latter entirely with masking tape.

Attach parts together with masking tape.  Now apply strips of (a) a minimum of four alternating layers of newsprint and/or (b) paper pulp. Pulp is ideal for creating dimension including facial features, hands, boots, etc.

Let dry thoroughly by a fan.

Paint and decorate as desired.

Seal your creation with a layer or two of clear polyurethane.
