Papier Mache - New Year's Eve celebrations in the middle of the world.

Papier mache features very strongly in Ecudor, and these pictures sent to us from Jose Tobar of their New Year's Eve celebrations shows that they all at it!

Some lovely colourful photos and very impressive models.

WOW!  There's a lot of time and talent invested in those figure!

I would certainly like to see Ecuador at that time of year -- it would be fascinating.

I wonder if they use some kind of forms for those large figures, or if they are built freehand.  Either way, they are very impressive.  And such a wide variety!

Thank you, Jose Tobar for showing us such great work.

Jose,

Thank you for sharing a slice of your world with us. Agreed with Sue, it would be very fascinting to be there for New Year's celebrations.
Reminds me a bit of the Mexican custom "Judas" figures that are burned for Easter celebrations.

The only thing I don't understand is the American Comic book characters. Are Comic charaters big in the custom of New Year's. Are they made for the children or the US tourists?

Thanks again for the article/photos!
Kevin
