Hi all,
I've had a look through some of the gallery's and all I can say is WOW! Some of your sculptures are AMAZING. So much imagination, and patience!
I have a 6yr old son, and have tried making papier mache before, but it never really worked. He has now broken his ankle so is off school for a couple of days so thought we'd give it a go again.
We're aiming to make a new fruitbowl as ours smashed recently. Have used a balloon to model it on, and strips of newspaper and watered down pva glue. I'm hoping it's going to be right, and sturdy enough.
We've attached it to a base and will hopefully build it up as in one of the bowls on this site (sorry can't remember which one).
We're also hoping to make a few 'fruit' shapes to stick on the outside and paint. ie. banana/orange/apple/strawberry/grapes etc.
What's the best way to go about doing this? Out of scrunched up newspaper, then tape on, and pva over the top?
We're at the stage now, where it has dried, and I've just coated it in un-watered down pva. Can't remember why, but sure I've seen it on one of the kids 'arty' programs!
Any help advice would be REALLY appreciated!
Thanks
Bev

Hi Bev,
You could make your fruit shapes out of pulp papier mache (instructions in "Getting Started") If you draw the outline of the fruit onto your bowl with a soft pencil, you can then build up your pulp straight onto the bowl.
Pulp shrinks quite a lot and takes a long time to dry. You will need to build it up several times until you have the density of the fruit that you require. With a bit of patience, you should have a very attractrve new fruit bowl!
