The History of Papier Mache

I don't know if this will work but how about creating a thread that consolidates relevant historical info regarding papier mache and all its forms/uses. (We may even get heavy by mentioning the cultural and sociological influences!)

You don't have to write a massive dissertation, it could just be an interesting weblink or amazing tidbit of knowledge.

Just to start off and I only learned this to-day:

The Drottningholms Slottsteater (Drottningholms Palace Theatre) , near Stockholm, has a very impressive auditorium with what appears to be plaster decorations but are in fact a mixture of Papier mache and stucco.

Fifth pic down is of the auditorium.
