Can I use a sandpaper to get a smooth surface?

Hi, I´m from Mexico and i want to make a surfboard whit papier mache and I was thinking that it wold be a good idea use a sandpaper to get a smooth surface in the surfboard, but I don't wanna estroper it, so if somebody have a solution for me I wold be very Thankful.

Of course you can use sandpaper to smooth it down. But that won't help when you get half way up that big wave and your board feels like a piece of french toast...surf's up, dude. Wear a life vest.

Thank you mr. papiermache you help me a lot, but when i said that I would do a surfboard of Papier Mache I was referring to do an adornment for my room, because I want to paint it and hang it and I dont wanna spoil my surfboard (the one that I use on the waves).
I will need to be crazy to use it for surf the waves jajaja, anyway you help me a lot thankyou.
